As LGBTQIA+ athletes, some of us may have past experiences of discomfort in athletic spaces or challenges integrating our athletic identities and our sexuality or gender identity. This retreat will offer space to share some of our experiences and well as the opportunity to practice using effective tools to feel more grounded, confident, and integrated as both LGBTQIA+ people and athletes.

Names and Faces

Matt Fitzgerald

Host

Matt started running on April 19, 1983, one day after watching his father complete the Boston Marathon. This began a lifelong love affair with the sport. Having completed 50 marathons of his own, authored more than 30 books, cofounded the world’s largest online provider of endurance training resources, and coached dozens of his fellow runners to their goals, Matt lives by the motto, “Let your passion, not your ability, decide how far you go.” That’s why he created Dream Run Camp–to enable runners of all abilities who share his passion for the sport to see just how far they can go.

Darlene Hall, PhD

Guest Speaker

Darlene is a Black lesbian psychologist with strong social justice values and a lifelong commitment to sports/athletics and health. Believing that athletic participation can be a foundation for physical, emotional, and spirit health across the lifespan, Darlene had her first track meet at nine years old, began playing volleyball and running “distance for fun” at thirteen, and began pickleball at fifty-three in 2019. Darlene has volunteered for multiple athletic endeavors, including board leadership (President and Secretary) for FrontRunners (LGBTQ running club), founding a running and walking club for LGBTQs of Color, serving as Female Sports Director of Athletics for the 2020 Gay Games bid, and serving on the Advisory Board for the Homophobia in Sports Project of the National Center for Lesbian Rights. Living in the San Francisco/Bay Area, Darlene has a psychotherapy private practice and consulting business, which provides services in multiple areas including sports/athletics and health.

Chris Mosier

Guest Speaker

Chris Mosier is a trailblazing hall of fame triathlete, All-American duathlete, and eight-time member of Team USA. In 2015 he became the first known transgender man to represent the United States in international competition and was the catalyst for change for the International Olympic Committee policy on transgender athletes. He is also a four-time national champion and the first transgender athlete to compete in the Olympic Trials in any sport in a category different than their sex assigned at birth.

In 2016, he was sponsored by Nike and featured in his own Nike commercial, which debuted on prime time during the Rio Olympics. Chris was the first trans athlete featured in the ESPN Body Issue.

Chris is known as the go-to source for policy and information on transgender people in sport. In 2013, Chris created the site transathlete.com, a resource for students, athletes, coaches, and administrators to find information about trans inclusion in athletics at various levels of play. He has mentored transgender athletes around the globe, from high school to the professional level, and helped teams, leagues, and professional sports leagues create gender-inclusive policies.
